We all want to protect our families and our homes as much as we possibly can, whether we are away on holiday, or just out for the day. If we are going away then I do worry about leaving our house in case something should happen, which is why home security is so important.
There are lots of things you can do to protect your home; some are simple changes you can make and some are bigger jobs that can be expensive, but there are lots of options available to you.
Home security is something worth investing in if you are able to and you don’t necessarily have to spend loads to have a secure home. Good security will help to deter intruders as well as physically stopping anyone from entering your home.
Top Tips for Improving Your Home’s Security
Assess your home security
First of all, you need to work out how secure your home currently is so that you know whether you need to invest in anything to improve it and where you need them. How safe is your location and what are the crime rates currently like in your area? How secure are the door locks, and are there any vulnerabilities in the security that a malicious person could exploit? Do you leave any windows open at night or when you go out for the day, which someone could get through?
It’s a good idea to prioritise what will help the most and where the biggest weaknesses are in your home. You may just need to make a few small changes to make it much more secure and safe such as closing windows when you leave.
Get a home camera
These don’t have to be expensive, although you can also get expensive systems installed throughout your home if you want to do that.
We just have these great low-cost cameras in three different places in our home. It means we can keep an eye on our home when we are out or check the camera’s on our phones if any movement is detected. When we are out for the day or away overnight it is great to be able to check everything is alright in our house.
You could have a camera pointing towards your back garden to monitor it whilst you are out and make sure your house is safe via an app.
There are so many benefits to having a security camera in the home, and it’s really nice having that reassurance that your house is a bit more protected when you are away from it.
You can also think about getting a doorbell which has a camera integrated so that you can look on your phone to see who is there before you answer it and keep you safe.
Get shutters on your windows
You may not have thought about what you have over your windows in relation to home security, but it can actually make a big difference.
Unlike curtains and blinds, window shutters can make a house much safer as they are made of strong wooden materials that are built into the frame of the windows so they can’t move around, meaning no-one could get access to a property that way.
They also give you more privacy as people on the outside cannot see completely into your windows even if you have the slats open, making them a great choice for improving the security of your home.
Shutters don’t have to be very expensive either. If you go for DIY shutters then you can measure, order and install them yourself as there are loads of helpful videos and tutorials making it a great option to get high-quality shutters at a much more affordable price.
Have good lighting
Make sure your home, and particularly your entrances are well-lit. It will look more like someone might be at home if there are lights on at the door and will make it less likely that someone could break in without being seen. It also means that if you need to answer the door to anyone in the evening you can see them properly.
If you go out at night make sure you leave some lights on indoors as well so it won’t be obvious you are all out, and do the same if you are going on holiday. You can get timers for light switches relatively cheaply so lights and lamps don’t have to be left on all day.
Talk to your neighbours
If you have any neighbours that you know and trust then hopefully you will already look out for each other’s houses, particularly when each of you are away.
It’s a good idea to give them a heads up if you are going away so that they can keep an extra eye out for you, and you can do the same for them too. If they are a friend then you can even ask them to nip in once a day or so and close and open the curtains or take out the bins for you, so that there is movement and it looks less like no-one is home for a duration.
Make sure your home is insured
Is your home properly insured? Home insurance is really important and if the worst should happen and someone breaks into your home then at least you know your belongings are covered. It can especially give some extra reassurance when you are going on holiday.
Don’t underestimate how much insurance can save you in the long run; even though you’ll need to budget for it, it will always be less expensive than having to buy all of your belongings again.
