With mouths to feed, energy bills to pay and mortgage or rent to keep on top of, saving money can be a hard task.

Saving money can be very difficult. When the bills have been paid and the food shop is done, there can sometimes be very little left for luxuries. For many, it’s a way of life. It’s good to know that if you take some advice on board, you can easily save a few extra pennies to spend on the finer things in life.
It’ll take some determination and a bit of a rethink to build up the bank balance, but it’s more than doable. So, where should you begin? These tips are here to shed some light on the matter and help you well on your way to starting to save some money.
Cut fuel bill costs
The biggest eater of money in a household has to be your home heating. It’s something you rely on, especially in the winter months, to keep you warm and comfortable while you’re at home. It can be a bad habit to turn it on every evening or to schedule it to come on at a certain time, even when it might not be needed.
Instead of falling into the trap of turning up the thermostat or keeping on the heating for long periods of time, try turning it down. You can save money each year just by turning down your thermostat by 1 degree, and you’ll not even notice the difference. If it’s just a bit chilly, grab a blanket or put on another layer.
When you do need to heat up your home, heating oil is a good source to look into switching to when you’re trying to save money. Doing your own research on heating oil prices will give you a good idea of the amount of money you can save. It’s a more efficient and cost-effective way of heating your home.
Home phones and mobiles
If you have a home phone, it’s worth regularly shopping around to see if you can get a better deal. There are usually much cheaper packages around these days and ones that include your home phone, television and broadband in with the price.
The same goes for mobiles. These days, you rarely see anyone without a mobile phone, meaning suppliers are coming up with better deals month on month to secure more custom. Shop around for the best deal and, if you can’t find one, ask the network provider to price match.
Sim only deals are really worth considering as they can often work out much cheaper than a monthly contract, and if you need to save more money at any point then you can change to a lower-priced deal. With a sim only contract, you pay a monthly amount and still get the benefits of an ongoing contract, such as great value data. I’m on a sim only deal and it works really well for me. They are much more flexible than a monthly contract, you often only need to give 30 days’ cancellation so it’s a good option if you don’t want to (or can’t afford to) commit to a long contract.
Consider a water meter
Water is something we use every day and sometimes, it can really be taken for granted. We pay for the water we use, so we expect it to come to us in unlimited supply. If you only have a couple of occupants in your home, a water meter could save you a ton of money. In this case, you’d only be paying for the water you use instead of paying a set fee each month. You should do your research to see whether a water meter would be beneficial for your household in the long term.
Plan your food shop
The first rule of food shopping; don’t go on an empty stomach. Not unless you want to spend a fortune, that is. Saving money while food shopping may seem a difficult task, but when you know where to shop and how to reduce the amount that goes in your trolley, you’re onto a winner.
Before you leave the house, go and see what you’re running low on. You’ll know some of the things you need weekly by heart but refrain from buying junk food and snacks that you don’t need. Be careful you don’t buy duplicates either! If you walk into the supermarket and stick to your shopping list, you’ll be surprised at how cheap your total will be.
Sell unwanted items
Whether you’re a loyal eBay customer or not, it’s always useful to have a clear out of your old items and sell them for a little extra spending money. It’s pretty easy to work out which items you should say goodbye to. Simply open your cupboards and wardrobe – if you haven’t used that item in the last three years, it’s time for them to go!
Saving money is easier than you think
These are just a few of the many great tips you can use to help you when saving money. Sticking to budgets, clearing out your old items and looking for better deals on your energy and water usage can instantly give you a little money boost.
