Better‌ ‌Business‌ ‌Backups: ‌Considering‌ ‌The‌ ‌Influential‌ ‌Factors‌

Home » Blog » Business » Better‌ ‌Business‌ ‌Backups: ‌Considering‌ ‌The‌ ‌Influential‌ ‌Factors‌

The only asset for any business which cannot be overlooked is the critical data. Essentially, this data could be anything from customer information to credit and debit details, to secret formulas. It is vital to protect against data loss at any cost and so it’s important for companies to look into data backup solutions and research which companies will protect them from the inside out from the start. Knowing your stuff and whether Pathlock or Fastpath, for example, is right for your business is key so that you don’t run into major problems down the line.

However, backing up data is one thing and protecting it against potential loss is another. Most of the companies that opt for a data backup often ignore the importance of its security.

In this article, we’ve put down a few factors that may risk data. Notably, understanding these factors can help ensure better backup options for businesses. So, without any further ado, let’s go through the factors.

Network Configuration

The most important factor that can jeopardise any data for an enterprise is its network configuration. Essentially, every digital backup medium makes use of several stages of security in its network. Simply put, every level can be accessed with a certain key. To improve security, companies often choose two-way keys to allow access to data. This form of network configuration can be easily seen in the banking system and financial institutions. The data can be controlled from only a few locations which are often known as data centres.

Apart from this, another possibility is to opt for a dedicated network. A typical example of a dedicated network can be found in government agencies. No one outside the agency can access confidential information. It means, to access the data one must access the network line first.

Individual Access

As already mentioned the different levels of security in network configuration can help protect the data, however, there may still be some loops to it. Most commonly, data thefts are triggered by moles within the organisation. To counter this problem, selective access to the data at every stage can be implemented. It would allow only authorized personnel to access the data regardless of their clearance level.

Typically, large corporations often set up limitations for executive, officer, and management personnel. While the managers may be able to access more information, an officer might have limited access. It solely depends on the hierarchy of the employees in the organization. So, you can also try organizing the individuals on the basis of accessibility.

Human Error (Intentional & Unintentional)

There can also be possible human errors that may lead to data loss. For instance, you or maybe one of your employees can accidentally delete a file from the system. In such a case, a backup may prove helpful. But what if the file is deleted from the backup as well? Luckily, there are recovery solutions to help with that as well.

While human error can be both intentional and unintentional, the solution works in both cases and you would need to consult with data experts to help you prevent anyone from getting their hands on the data.

Many businesses now choose to use Artificial Intelligence where possible, as this can reduce the risk of error at the same time as speeding up efficiency and reducing running costs. Machine Vision with a company such as Multipix can have a great impact on a businesses output by massively reducing the risk of human error.

Backup Location

Another possible threat of data loss is the location itself. Perhaps the backup location, or as it is commonly referred- data centres, need to be fully equipped to handle any adversity. A common issue could be a power outage which may cause an abrupt shutdown of the servers, leading to data loss. A smart way to support the data centres would be emergency power backups such as a diesel generator. You can find several of the options here depending on the energy needs. It is needless to mention that accidents and natural influencers can always disrupt the grid supply, and having a backup is always better.

Along with the need for power backup, the distance of the data centre from the access point also makes a difference. In other words, the farther the data centre is, the more it is prone to data loss and theft. A simple solution, though, can be to set up several data centres and putting a copy with each of them for easy and secure access.

Data Encryption

Lastly, there is a constant threat to any data from potential online hackers. Phishing is one of the imminent threats to any organization. These perpetrators hack into your system and capture critical data. In exchange for it, they demand a ransom. A smart way to beat these pirates is to use data encryption. Doing so can protect your data even if the phishers or scammers get their hands on the data files.

Notably, the encryption of data can also vary in terms of encryption code and the bit-length. Choosing the type of encryption would depend on the importance of the said data to be secured.

Preparing for the worst is the best survival. Hopefully, now that you know about what may affect your backup data, you ought to be able to better prepare against potential threats to your business.
