How to Motivate Your Child to Learn

Home » Blog » Family and Parenting » How to Motivate Your Child to Learn

When it comes to motivating your child to learn, there are many different ways that you can approach this. Sometimes rules, consequences and rewards don’t work because each child is motivated in a different way. Finding out what motivates your child can effectively help them learn better. Here are some top tips from a sixth form in Bath on how to motivate your child to learn.

Start by stopping the use of traditional methods for motivation. The majority of the time, when you try to motivate your child in a way that doesn’t work for them, you are most likely doing the exact opposite which is demotivating them. In order for your child to be motivated in the right way, they need to enjoy the activity that they are doing. If an activity is not enjoyable to your child, no amount of pushing or bribing can make them like it. It will only create a struggle. The best approach is to use external factors to help motivate them.

Help them instead of trying to control what they do. Rewarding, nagging and even praising can be a way to control the way your child behaves. Applying pressure cannot make an activity enjoyable at all. Allow your child to take initiative and use the freedom to learn at their own pace. Aim to inspire your child, not control. In order to make it easier for them, show them different skills that can make learning fun. Create an environment that makes learning easy and enjoyable. A space dedicated completely to their studies can make them feel special and want to learn.

Get involved. One way to help promote motivation in your child is by making it an activity that the whole family can participate in to show how much they value it. Parental involvement whilst a child is at school is one of the most important parts of progression. Once your child starts developing motivation, help them set some goals that can keep them going.
