How to Raise a Compassionate Child

Home » Blog » Family and Parenting » How to Raise a Compassionate Child

An important value to teach your child is compassion. It helps us to be better people and form stronger connections with those in our lives. A sixth form college in Hertfordshire shares a list of ways in which you can do this with your child below.

Talk to Them About Their Feelings

It’s important to stay in tune with your feelings in order to understand and deal with them. By encouraging your child to consider their own, you can help them to build their emotional intelligence and help them to be more considerate of others’.

Model Compassion

The way that you behave and interact with the world creates a blueprint for your child. Naturally, as their guardian, your child will look up to you and try to imitate your behaviour which is why it’s important for you to embody the messages that you’re trying to teach them. To develop compassion, you can help those that are around you like your neighbours and family members. To help them understand what you’re doing, verbalise your thought process and explain why it’s a nice thing to do.

Point It Out

You may also be a receiver of acts of kindness and can use them as opportunities to show them the effect that compassion has on others by expressing your gratitude.

Watch TV

TV can give children a glimpse into what real life is like. They can see different social situations unfold and how they can affect people as well as show compassion and kindness. From that, they can become more empathetic and emotionally intelligent.

Self-Compassion

Being kind to yourself is just as important. That means speaking to yourself and treating yourself kindly. It can greatly affect a person’s mood and confidence which is why it’s important to teach your child to do this from the very beginning whilst they are young.
