Outdoor learning has many great benefits. It helps to promote gross motor skills in children while significantly improving their mental health and wellbeing by allowing them to get fresh air and run around. We have teamed up with a prep school in Surrey to share 5 outdoor learning activities that you can explore with your child.

Butterfly Spotting
Butterflies are beautiful creatures with fascinating life cycles that you can teach your child all about. You can take this lesson outdoors by getting them to spot butterflies. This can be adapted for older children that can use binoculars and cameras to identify and spot the different species. This activity can help your little one to develop an appreciation for nature while improving their attention to detail.
Observing the Sky
You can also utilise the outdoors to support your child’s science lessons. Using a telescope or the naked eye, get your child to spot what they can see in the night sky using their knowledge of astronomy. If you have equipment that allows, you can look for the different planets together or spot Orion’s Belt by eye.
The Plant Life Cycle
Gardening teaches children about the plant life cycle as well as how to nurture and take care of living things. This is a lesson that you can easily adapt for older children too. For example, you can look at how the direction of light affects plant growth via auxin and plant adaptations that have allowed them to grow and survive like their waxy leaves.
Stick Buildings
This activity encourages children to use their imagination and problem-solving skills to build sculptures using only objects that they are able to find in their garden. This is a fun activity that you can do with children of all ages which makes for great bonding time.
