Exploring STEM Subjects with Your Child

Science, technology, engineering and maths are needed to create the inventors and scientists of tomorrow. However, between 92% and 97% of all children lose interest in these subjects by the time that they leave primary school. STEM careers earn around 26% more than jobs in non-STEM backgrounds and also report a lower risk of job loss, making for a secure future. We have teamed up with a senior school in Lincolnshire to share a few ways that you can explore STEM subjects with your child.

Gardening

Outdoor learning activities such as gardening can teach children all about the plant life cycle and adaptations in biology. There are many science experiments that you can do with your child to explain and investigate this. For example, you can investigate how plants grow when placed towards and away from sunlight.

Coding Games

Coding is basic literacy in the world of computer science that can help your child to understand and work with different pieces of technology. While many of us might not know where to start, there are lots of games out there that can teach your child and make the process of coding fun too. They teach children about loops and other functions that are later needed to navigate through them.

Quiz Night

Quizzes are great for encouraging sharper thinking and can assist your child in their STEM subjects too as they primarily rely on problem-solving skills, critical thinking and creativity. That might be a mental maths showdown or a game of Pictionary to help boost your child’s brainpower and thinking skills.

Cooking

Cooking involves a range of the skills mentioned above as well as maths and science. By encouraging your child to help out, you can get them to practice their maths as they weigh out ingredients and explore science when observing different chemical processes.
